Daniel Thwaites Legacy
In the last few years the Hoghton Tower shoot has expanded onto the neighbouring Woodfold Estate at Pleasington in Blackburn.
The Woodfold Estate is owned by Robert Guy Eardley Yerburgh, 2nd Baron Alvingham, a descendant of Daniel Thwaites who established Thwaites Brewery in Blackburn.
Thwaites Brewary - Shire Horses
Members of the Yerburgh family still run Thwaites Brewery today. The brewery is famous for its Shire Horses which is part of their company branding.
Unfortunately another branch of the Yerburgh family is less animal friendly. Robert Guy Eardley Yerburgh allows thousands of ducks and pheasants to be used as live targets by the Hoghton Tower shoot on the Woodfold Estate each year.
It's not just birds that are subjected to terror, shooters and beaters ignored the obvious distress of sheep in order to maximise the number of pheasants they killed. If a member of the public had caused this level of distress the farmer would have called the police.
Appeals to Lord Alvingham to have a heart for wildlife via his land agent have gone unanswered. It appears that Lord Alvingham is happy that Daniel Thwaites legacy to Blackburn includes the slaughter of wildlife for profit.
